Update on
Keith's Health
(updated February 21, 2010)
Chemo treatments are going as
normal. This round of treatments will last until the end of
March which will conclude the “standard” six months of
treatment. The side effects still remain and are a little longer
and are a little stronger with each session. What happens after
March will depend on this week’s tests.
His retinal bleeding in the right
eye is still being treated with injections. The result of the
last evaluation indicates it does not seem to be getting any
worse, which for right now is all that they want to see.
His cardiac evaluation is coming
up soon, although the cardiologist is deferring to the
Oncologist so he hasn't scheduled any tests as of yet to
evaluate the status of the other blockages to see if they have
increased or been kept in check by the medications.
(updated December 09, 2009)
Keith started the second round of chemo early
November. In this round a new drug was added, which makes for
what they call 'combination therapy.' It takes about four hours
to receive the new treatment, so this means he now has what is
called 'long days' and 'short days' of treatments. Keith now
goes in on both Mondays and Tuesday for the 'long days' of
treatment. For now this new regimen is scheduled with each
Monday and Tuesday in a week now alternating between the 'short
days' of treatment on the regular chemo, followed the next week
by 'long days' of treatment on the 'combination therapy.' Plus
there are now blood profiles every other week. With this new
regimen he gets quite a bit sicker and has more side effects. In
fact he takes a powerful anit-nauseant to help out.
A problem has developed with his eyesight.
It’s not definite but it seems like it may be more related to
his heart condition and associated medications. The retina in
Keith’s right eye has started to bleed, and as a result his
vision in that eye has been weakened. Since it’s very possible
he could go blind in that eye, specialists are allowing him to
try an 'off label' treatment with a drug that is not presently
“approved,” but has been showing promise in trials. It is
hoped that the drug can arrest the bleeding, (or at least slow
it down), which it has shown to do in a certain number of
similar cases.
Keith still has
all his hair!
(updated
October 14, 2009) Here’s a brief update concerning Keith’s
health. He began weekly chemotherapy treatments mid-September
for what’s been diagnosed as stage 3 colon cancer. Initially he
did not experience any strong side effects but recently they
have become stronger (in particular the nausea fatigue and
diarrhea). Since it’s early in the treatment phase the doctor’s
are unable to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatments.
Keith wrote recently, “I am enjoying
everything for the sake of the effectual working of God's
word, and have the hope of continuing to do so.”

At the time of this writing
Keith is re-covering from surgery for colon cancer. He underwent
a complete colectomy and ileostomy.
During surgery a second active
cancer was found in the upper portion of the small intestine,
but it was not able to be completely removed. In addition
subsequent pathologies have indicated that cancer is also
pre-sent in at least one other system.
So he has now been turned over
to oncology for a full and thorough assessment of the nature of
the cancers and their stages of development. He will then be
given a prognosis of their activities and effects, along with a
determination of treatment options.
When further updates are
available we will post them on our website.

Website Improvement
Our website now has a new and better
Shopping Cart feature that is easier to use, and which also should eliminate some of the
limitations associated with the former one.

If you are moving and will be sending us a change of address,
please also include your old address to help ensure that we can
update our records accurately.
Our Toll-free Number
Our toll-free number is an unattended voice-mail system,
since we are only able to have our office open when one of our volunteers is
able to work. Because of this, using our toll-free number is not the best
way to place an order for any of our materials. For unlike our secure web
site, or our P.O. Box, we are not able to regularly monitor our toll-free
number, which results in delays when receiving orders. Nor does our
toll-free number automatically provide us with an easy-to-read and complete
written record of an order, as our web site does.
So to help us be more efficient we ask that from now on
all orders for any of our materials be placed through our secure web site,
or by regular mail to our P.O. Box, whenever possible. This will help our
volunteers to receive orders more readily and accurately, and thereby
process them more efficiently.
