"Could you possibly be worshipping the wrong
God?"
"That's a foolish question to ask! Of course not. My religion has been
around for a long, long time. As a matter of fact, for hundreds and hundreds of years.
And there are thousands upon thousands of followers of my religion. It's the truth, so
I know that I'm not worshipping the wrong God."
"But there are many other different religions in the world whose followers
can say the same thing, and they are just as sure that they are not worshipping the
wrong God. Do you think that all religions are right?"
"No, of course not. They all cannot be right."
"I'll agree with that. It is obvious in view of their vast differences and
contrary beliefs that they cannot all be right. If
God is a God of truth, He cannot be behind them all. In fact, because of the very
nature of truth itself it is obvious that only one out of the many can be true. So
my question is really not foolish at all."
"Well, that may be so; but I'm still sure that I am not worshipping the wrong
God, or a false God."
"But you must admit that it is possible. In fact if you have never honestly
investigated the possibility, then it may very
well be that you really are worshipping the wrong God and just do not know it."
"Look, why are you making such a big deal out of this anyway? What
difference does it make to you? Or are you just
trying to convert me to your religion?"
"It is true that I am not a follower of your religion. However I am asking
you to consider the possibility that you are worshipping the wrong God, because
the God of The Bible says that He is `the true and living God,' the creator of the
heavens, and the earth, and all things that are therein. He also says that His book,
The Bible, is `the word of truth.' And in it He even explains where other religions
come from and how they are not pleasing unto Him. Now if this is true, as He says it
is, then you truly are worshipping the wrong God. And not only that, but there are
very serious consequences for you in doing so."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, listen to what He says in this portion of His word:"
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all
ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in
unrighteousness; (Romans 1:18)
"This verse is the first part of the message that God says He wants all men
to hear. And as you can see it says that God wants men to know that His wrath
is against them because of all of their `ungodliness and unrighteousness.' But
then He goes on to say that the very first act of ungodliness and unrighteousness that
angers Him is the issue of men not responding to Him properly. And this includes
not only men who do not respond to Him at all, but also ones who do not respond
to Him as `the true and living God' that He is."
"Well, I'm not an atheist that's for sure."
"Yes, that's right. But if the God of The Bible is the `true and living God' that
He says He is, then you still have not responded properly to Him as such. And
this means that His wrath is still against you, just as He says it is."
"That's only what this book you call The Bible says. And you are the one
who is convinced that it is right. But I don't think that it is."
"Well, I don't expect you to think that it is right. At least not at this time. In
fact, for you to think that The Bible is not right is simply part of the `ungodliness
and unrighteousness of men' that God is talking about. So I understand that.
However, all that I would like you to do is to honestly consider whether what I
originally asked could be true of you. Could you
possibly be worshipping the wrong God?"
"It's possible, but I don't think so."
"Well, I hope that you will give it more of an honest consideration than that. I
hope that you will at least give an honest hearing to the rest of what The Bible says
that God wants you to hear. In fact, it's only common sense for you to do so. This
is because you can afford to be wrong about a lot of things, but you cannot afford to
be wrong about God and what He says. There are very serious consequences to
that. Once again, if the God of The Bible is the `true and living God,' then His wrath
is against you for not responding to Him as such. And you will one day experience
His wrath when He judges you for your `ungodliness and unrighteousness.' In
view of this, will you honestly consider whether you could possibly be worshipping
the wrong God?"
"Maybe."
